I had to adjust 8 clicks to the right, and 6 clicks up, is this POI change normal, was it a once off or could the zero return to 8 clicks to the left and 6 down?

At shot 16 I stopped for 10 minutes. That might be the reason for the increase in speed in shot 17. I also stopped other times and everytime the next shot, after the cool-of period, was faster.
Shot 40 was fired only the next morning with no increase in speed, meaning a new cannister is needed. Pellet used was Daystate 8.44's 4.53.

Anyone else have CO2 shotstrings?

In some places the river devides up into up to 20 channels like this. even though ive been down that strech more than 20 times i still get lost sometimes.


The kayaks were not the best choice for this part of the river. This is a small rapid , at the bigger ones we could not risk getting the cameras out.

This rifle used to be deadly accurate and I could hit anything at will up to 50m. She seems to struggle beyond 35m these days. Tried different pellets and all...

It also seems that the MV has dropped by about 60fps. Used to do JSB Exacts at about 1010fps (and still very accurate) and now at about 950fps. Even at 30m JSB's is not great on grouping. Crosman Premiers are OK on 30m.

Anyways - I think she just needs some tender loving care.

Who best in JHB/PTA area to service my once darling rifle??

Since the times of dragons, werewolves and vampires, people have been looking for a magic piece of equipment that will enable them to better their nemesis.

Today people are still dreaming of that special piece of equipment that will make them a great shot.

Not better.

Great!

That brings us to the modern air rifle user, and specifically the Field Target shooter.

The needs of the Field Target shooter, with regards to the magic piece of equipment called “The Scope”, are great and all encompassing indeed.

- Sharp (Auto)focus capability from 8m to 200m.
- Enlargement capability from 4x to 100x.
- Light gathering capability that will make cats blush.
- Side focus that will double as rangefinder, and stays consistent.
- Turret elevation adjustments with fantastic clicks.
- Turret windage adjustments.
- Illuminated reticule.
- Eye relief of 20cm.
- Waterproof.
- Dust proof.
- Light.
- Etc. Etc.

The list goes on, and on.

But.

Unfortunately, like the old dragon hunters also found out, the magic bullet does not exist.




Instead, we have to live with the flawed equipment that our limited budgets (and watchful wives) will allow us.



Coming from the old open sight springers of my youth, I bought my first PCP and was simply dumbfounded, at first, that there weren’t sights fitted to the rifle!!
I promptly corrected this with a scope that was “AO”, had 6-24x enlargement, and had an illuminated mildot reticule.

But, it suffered from bad focus shift which made range finding impossible, and I found that the 24x enlargement was simply inadequate even while the image at 24x was very “milky”.

Then I read about a magic bullet!

A scope that can zoom 10-50x, range find with the best and had all the side wheels and turrets that will make me a great shot……..

But, it was still quite “milky” at full zoom and extremely bulky and heavy!

Then I read about a magic bullet!

The latest, greatest scope!
It corrected all the shortcomings of the scope I had.

But, it still didn’t make me a great shot.

Then I read about a magic bullet……………




In the olden days there were two kinds of hunters of magical creatures.

Those that lived, and those that died.

The difference between life and death for these hunters were quite simple.
You had to know your equipment.
You had to know your adversary.
You had to know your own limitations.
You had to know your equipment’s limitations.
You had to train. Often.

If, on the other hand, you wanted to be in the “Those that died” group, all you needed was a magic bullet………………..



Indeed, today’s air rifle user should learn this lesson too.

YOU can be a great shot, if you know your equipment and its limitations, if you know your own limitations, and

If,

You train. Often.


You should only upgrade your equipment if you have reached the limit of what the equipment can do, and this equipment limitation prevents you reaching personal limitations.

Only then will better equipment make you a better shot.

Better, not great.

Only training can make you great.



Start with yourself.

here are a few pics.

the design was for a metal (iron) muzzle weight/barrel finisher with a 40mm threaded part were a threaded brass weight can be moved back and forth to attain the best harmonic wave of the gun when fired causing (hopefully :) ) better accuracy...the theory sound great, the reality will have to be tested soon.

slash made not only made one adjustably weight as per original design but 4 different weights so as to test the system even further. AND he made a special tool out of solid brass to turn the weights and end cap into place! the weights have a groove to fit and oring if necessary to stop the weights from moving inside the body of the AHT

the AHT is 140mm long and 90mm slips over the barrel (15mm OD) and is fastened by 3x 3mm grub screws then the other 40mm is threaded to accept the weights.

Slash finished the whole lot off with a fantastic wooden box that all the parts fit in. i was really surprised when i got it!

Anyway as always Slash did a great job and i just want to say thank you!

I was told that the energy yield you could expect from a 5.5mm FAC TX200 would be in the region of 16ft/lbs.......And there I was, thinking one would get at least somewhere around 23ft/lbs. I mean, a .177/4.5mm PCP and or springer is quite capable of delivering 16ft/lbs, so why "upgrade" to a 5 or 5.5mm if energy levels stay the same?

Or am I mistaken? 23ft/lbs would mean around 750fps with a 18 or so grain pellet - somehow it still seems to me that this should be quite easily achievable in a decent springer? I think I might have missed it.

Anyway, I looking to buy a range finder in the near future and are doing some homework on them now. I've got no need to range beyond say 250m. I just want something that can tell me the distances in the 40m to 120m range and I'm not willing to sell a kidney to afford it. Some where in the R1000 to R1500 slot will do just fine.

I fetched it Saturday morning and was glad to find that Henry's son even tweaked the magezine indexer that was slipping. we did a quick chrony test and I was really happy with the 1018fps result at 200bar. And that is with the power grub screw about 2 thirds out. Im guessing its running at about 80% power. Further tests will confirm. I will do a shot string when I see Joggie on the long weekend.

I fitted my scope back home and got it zeroed in just a few shots. The top 2 targets was me me clicking away. I then did 2 shot groups per target and ended up with an 8mm 5 shot group in the middle of the page. I refilled to 200bar, and starded counting shots all the way down to 100bar. i got 6 x 8 shot mags. 48 shots without POI shift. All this at 18m. I didnt feel like moving the whole setup to the back yard. I then went to Spar and bought a bar of green soap. I wanted to do terminal bullistics test, but I would have retest with a harder substance. It went clean ( no pun intended ) through 5 x 1inch bars of soap. I also made a thread cap for the barrel and pollished the silender on the lathe.

It was a good fun day of shooting a really lovely rifle. This made me wonder why this rifle didnt sell quickly. Henry recons one of is costomers wants to sell his for R12000. I madness, but confirms to me that they are understated in the market. The service a bit pricy at R1050, but now its good for 2 years they say. All n all a pleasant weekend stooting.

They are now thinking to buy him a better riffle. He currently shoots with the school riffles or with his Gamo shado 640.

My brother recons thery shoot with a CZ200R ot CZ200R (not quite sure about the R or the T)

Any advice on what riffle to get would be great. What is the limitations or can you shoot with anything?
They are on quite a buget so pls keep this in mind when making suggestions. Having said that please let me know what is the thing to get as the school might make a sponsership/contribution

When I let my young ones shoot with open sights, recently I got some strange reactions from some fellow shooters. Their kids have never used open sights... I believe that there are situations where the use of open sights may even be preferable. Like when you're doing some late afternoon PC and light is too bad for scope use. Or getting rid of some rats at close range- no telescope, in my opinion, offers such quick sight allignment at close range...!
