    Default Magnification settings on scopes

    Hi all
Regarding the magnification settings on the scope I would like to know whether there is any negative effects to your scope when you change the magnification on the scope after each time you range-find? I mean during a good day of shooting it would happen a couple of times.

The other question I have is when you range-find you normally use the highest magnification your scope has, but what is the most common magnification you return your scope to take the shot? I?m sure preferences differ.

    Cheers

    Neal,

On a quality scope there will be no effect to altering the mag.

In respect of your second question I range and shoot on full mag as much as possible - if I am using my Mark4 I am stuck anyway as it is a fixed 32x. On my 20-50 I only drop mag if absolutely necessary to see a target less than 9 yards away.

in my case, i shoot on 30X, suppose i should really range @ 50X, but you know how lazy i am, so most of the time it stays on 30X.

But isn?t there a bigger possibility of making a shooting error at such high magnifications?

    Define 'shooting error'.

To be honest once you get the hang of high magnification, I find it more precise as you can see exactly what you are aiming at.

It does however take practice to get used to using the higher mag's, but the result is worth the effort.

I always used to use 20x now that I forced myself to use 50x I love the bigger magnification.
