At what velocity do we have to shoot with a 8.44gr pellet to accheve 20ft/lbs?, and wont it then be better to shoot with the 10.5gr pellets?

What is the formula to work out the energy?

piet use chairgun it works out all those questions.

with 8.44gr at 20fp the velocity is 1023fps.
with 10.5gr at 20fp the velocity is 926fps.

so the 10.5gr should be better.

You would think that they would do better than they did at worlds with those sort of shots at home.

Piet: The formula to work out energy for airguns, arrows, big rifles, where you have the weight in grains and the speed in ft/s is:

    Energy in ft lb =M x V x V/450240

The actual formula is a metric formula where weight is given in kg and velocity in m/s. If you do the conversion to ft lb where you have the velocity in ft/s and the weight in grains and depending on how you round of your calculations as you proceed, you get to the dividing factor of 450240

    So: 8.4 grains at 800 ft/s =

    8.4 x 800 x 800 / 450240 = 11.94

If you have 20 ft lb reverse the calculation:-

    20 x 450240 / 8.4 = 1072000 which is the velocity squared. The squareroot of this = 1035.37 ft/s.

Hope this will help you in your quest for ever increasing perfection. !lol :blueyes

You go for it. I will not change my rifle to suite the Yankies, not in this life. If I had a rifle with that power, yes I would participate for the fun, but I will not change my whole FT set up just to please them and I don't think the rest of the damn world should either. Let them shoot their own "Worlds" next year, let's see how they like it. I should have been a Yankee, always being upstream.

It would be greater beating them with a 12Ftlb rifle at their own game. The greatest still would be not to go at all until they conform to the the rest of the world.

Well, if their showing at the Worlds is anything to go by with standard size kill zones, then they shouldnt be able to hit "anything" smaller. We shoot 10mm out to around 19 meters, wheres the problem?
