Default Preferred Pellets in an AA s400

    Hi all.

New member, but been a lurker for a while.

Just curious for those of you who own an AA s400, what pellets have you found to work well with the rifle?

I have purchased a decent selection and have been finding out for myself and thus far it appears that the Crosman Accupels and the Prometheus TM1's group very nicely (only been shootin at a range of 20m benchrest).

Any suggestions for other manufacturers and the specific product made by them to try out?

    Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you get the correct answers you are looking for....!!! Sometimes you just have to do your own experimentation before you get to the correct pellets...... As far as selection is concerned, you cannot go wrong with AA Field and JSB Diabolo, as well as the JSB Heavy. They will all work fine, but it can also depend on what Energy levels you are shooting at....
If it is for Field Target only, you want to use the best, but if it is for hunting and penetration or knock-down power, you might have to sacrifice some accuracy for other advantages that you might need....

    Happy shooting....

If you can lay your hands on Accupels then use those, I have always used them in my S400 and I,ve always been happy with them. However Guido and others have told me to use J.S.Bs and if they were freely available to me I would!

I have been using AccuPells in my daughter's and my S400 for a long time. It was refered to as "Accucraps" by some of my shooting/hunting mates but we used it to great success. I would not think it is much better than most of the better pellets in that weight but I think it could hold its own. Bear in mind that it only weighs 7.9 gr compared to the normal 8.4 gr. So it would be a bit faster then. They are dirty but a good wash with Benzine(sorry Swannie) puts that right very quickly and they are as good as they come.

My good friend came to his senses and stopped using benzene.

Ive got another long story about pellets and are waiting for someone to mention FX-Premiums before I pull the rug from underneath them.

I use the following pellets in my 2 AA400's. AA FT, Daystate, JSB's and UltraTec Universals and they all group the same. The other brands do give more flyers and are not consisted. The JSB factory manufacture. AA FT, Daystate, JSB's and UltraTec pellets. Check out this link http://web.telecom.cz/schulz/main_e.htm

I take it you have a gripe with FX pellets. To be hoinest I did not like them for a long time.Until I tried them in my EV.They were a bit better than the Air Arms Fields at long range but worse at close range. Now how do you think that could happen.\

In my S400 i keep going back to Air Arms Fields.4.52.They are at the moment the best .I tried the JSB4.53's in the S400 and was not blown away. The other JSB's do pretty well.Accupels I dont like the way they load buy they group well for me(After a quick wash)If you are going for the cheapest then Gamo Pro Magnum are not too bad. When I had a few Daystate trials they were pretty ok(I could not help wonder if the price made me shoot them more carefully)They outshot the Air Arms Fields at that time.

I would just like to say. When my S400 was new its groupings were 15mm ctc after shooting for a couple of months the grouping came down to clover leaf groupings.

    My S400 likes AA FT 4.52s .

I have tried most of the brands , Accupel closest , but a few puzzling odd flyers ? ?

I have had much more consistencey with the AA.

I too have wondered if its me or the rifle , some times one wonders if one has a mental block or a mental preference for one over the other , but I'm pretty convinced its how I see it , AA marginally better than Accupel.

I suppose if one pellet type shoots better at short range , and another better at long range , you can always swop and change during a shoot !

I have'nt read the rules recently , but I dont think its prohibited in FT !

My S400 loves Diabolo Boxers (9.5 gr), however I struggle to keep them below 12 ft\lbs. Out the box the S400 shoots them at 12.4 - 12.5 ft\lbs. By far the best grouping. Also found them to be the best in my Gamo Hunter 440.

Bought a tin of Ultrtec Universal the other day, threw most of them away as the skirts were deformed, worst quality I have seen, although I must add was my first tin. The Marksman Pellets are better quality than these. Those that were OK did group well.

My S400 also likes Premier Crosman Ultra Magnums (10.5 gr), almost as good grouping as the Diabolo Boxers.

Thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated.

The cost of pellets is a really small thing for me, so I don't plan on cheaping out i.e. saving a few rands and pushing crappy lead through the barrel.

As far as shooting power goes, the rifle has been set to roughly 280m/s (not going to try do the Lb conversion becasue of course it varies depending on the mass of the pellet)

Will have to check out the Air Arms pellets, but unfortunately the only place I saw them was at Target Specialists where I got my rifle (great store), but apparently Bulldog does stock them.

(I tend to just stop by Sharp Edge Sharp Shooter on the way home from work and pick up what I need there)
