Its not a sure thing that single shots are more precise but with a single shot you eliminate the chance of the mag "clipping" or damaging the pellets

Damage to pellets in transfer from mag. A possibility, but not the rule.

With the single shot you can inspect the pellet before putting it directly into the rifle

Some rifles are also able to double load which can cause accuracy issues in competition.

I've seen on a few occasions during FT/SFT/HFT events where a competitor using a multishot rifle didn't keep count of his shots and then taking a shot at a target with no pellet loaded because the mag was empty. This constitues a shot as fired and the competitor is scored a "miss" on that target. That target may not then be fired at again. It's another reason a multishot is not the prefered action for these types of competitions. Single-shot adapters are usefull in replacing mags temporarely , but I feel they might also cause the same possible pellet damage when transfering the pellet from the adapter to the barrel.

I did that in Jan, shot a load of air at a 20m sitter

I also find for FT i rush my second shot as i cock it, range it and shoot.
I now range, cock then shoot to slow me down a bit.

If your single shot rifle allows you to load directly into the barrel you can also "feel" if the pellet is a good one. If not, you can call it or put it into a sighter.
