Hello Buzz, welcome to the forum.
Technically Lewis is right and technically he is also wrong.

The law states that you may not discharge an air rifle in a municipal area "without just cause". Thats the kicker, if you are shooting at a ligitimate target with adiquate backstop etc, that falls into the reasonable interpetation of just cause, but if you are shooting pigeons of your nieghbours roof the you have got problems.

The simple answer is in my interpretation of the law if you are using the air rifle for a legal perpose, ie target shooting and your yard has resonable space to contain the shot and please use as much noise controll as possible. Silencers, soft back stops etc. If you do the above you should be fine, provided you don't have a nieghbour complain!

As an example I opened an air range in JHB right in a densly populated urban area (its still running) and was given permission by local council, SAPS and got SABS aproval on the range design. So keep your nose clean with your nieghbours and u should be all right, also find a local club and get involved in the sport. Good luck and straight shooting!!

And for those of us in the EC, there's also a by-law prohibiting it.

When I do target shooting in my garden and the cops drives by, they stop and challenge me just to see who's better, but damn, they drink to much of my dop.

    Swannie ,

    You are lucky !

I used to enjoy visits from the cops , they drank a lot of coffee , but the local obnoxious ones realise that you are well connected and tend to leave your house alone !

That was my belief , now days that may be different !
