The only person here that I personally heard refering to to his rifle as a weapon is Alan. Most people here call it a gun. One oke I know talks of gunne. "Shots" have become widely known as "shooters." Hilarious don't you think?

There were also "shottists" in the past. "Shots" could arguably be confused with rounds fired. Although not easy on the ear, the American term "shooter" seems to be the most acceptable, although in SA it includes all robbers and their mates!

    Johan,
When referring to people shooting, you say: "We had 5 “shots” present." Shooters" or "shottists" (the latter does not get accepted by UK spell check either) could never be right when speaking proper English. In Afrikaans they would be called “’n Skut or skuts" The other day I heard somebody talk about "skutte." I don't find it strange because if the young people can't even pull their bloody pants up, comb their hair properly and put their underwear under their cloths, what do you expect from their language? I shudder right into my toes if I think I will have to entrust my daughter and grandchildren to some guy that wears a long sleeved vest under his T-shirt and socks with sandals. I see that daily when I drop Marguitte off at college.
Now you had a language lessen and a dress rehearsal all in one.

I should have taken my son in law out 12 years ago, before he married my eldest daughter. I could have been out on parole by now. She would have been married to somebody decent and her three children would have had a father they could have respect for, although she probably still would not have spoken to me.

    Dirk,
What on earth makes you say that? I'm my normal, cynical grumpy self. You just don't know me. You are better off like that, I’m told.

    I can't help.
Most of the good "shots" (skuts) don't call their airrifles 'guns' or 'weapons' they call they "Dommies"
