    Default Lightning XL problems

I got myself a Lightning XL (FAC). Very quiet and compact... seems like a great rifle. Only problem is that nobody seems to be able to shoot any decent groupings with it.

First I tried a lot of diffrent pellets incl. JSB's - DIDN'T WORK
So I thought it must be me... give the gun to some other guys to try - DIDN'T WORK

Can it be because the gun need a bit of breaking in?

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the scope or not, but I'm replacing it tonight.

Check all the screws on the stock if you havent already.

Yes, check scews mounting acton to stock, but also check that the breech block doesn't swivel too tightly or loosely. After cocking it should move a bit when tapped lightly and then come to rest after a few degrees worth of movement.
Have you checked the spring guides? Front or back one cracked perhaps?

    how bad are the groupings?

I have an XL and so does Andrew and we can vouch for their accuracy.

Beware though they are scope killers of note due to their light weight....try another scope first and also reverse the mounting plates on the scope mounts if u can since the BSA rails are about 14mm wide.

The Leapers mounts are reversible between 11 and 13mm

I got bad groupings with my Lightning and it was the front stock screws that where loose. I put some locktite on and tightened them ... no more problems.

I've checked every screw... nothing wrong there. I don't want to open the rifle to check for broken parts. It is brand new. I'll rather send it back. For the record, groupings is about 10cm at 20m with AA pellets

The XL is awesome in terms of accuracy vs price. I noticed though that you have the FAC version, how many fps?

aha, it probably killed your scope

Lightning XL in FAC .177 is not recommended.

I have the exact problem with my Gamo RSV. At first the grouping was so-so with the mushy trigger. Then I fitted a GRT II trigger and the groups improved vastly. Then all of a sudden I cannot get it to group 10 shots on an A4 paper at 25 meters!!
I checked for loose screws etc. but nothing looks or feels obviously wrong. As the RSV does not come with open sights my only assumption is that the scope is 'ill'. Will fit another scope when possible and test. Sorry, I don't want to hijack this thread Farmer, but the symptoms are very similar and I was hoping someone had the same problem and know what the cause could be...

Farmer, I had the same problem with the lighting that I bought from you. At first the trigger was very hard to break, allthough it broke very clean. After about 200 shots it became better and is now breaking softer and very clean. I have not measured the actual breaking force, but will do over the weekend.

It is a very light little rifle with a BIG clout. It kicks like a mule and is very difficult to control.

Try different ways of holding the rifle.
Normally one holds a springer very lightly and allow it to recoil the way it wants. Just be consistent (konsekwent) in yout hold.. I found that my lightning wants to be held loosely at front and more firmly at the back. Hold the pistol grip with a firm handshake grip and pull slightly into the shoulder.

Dont shoot over a solid rest. Not even if your hand is between the rifle and the rest. It jumps all over the place.

Johan is your XL also the 15 ft\lbs model?

If so I would advise detuning it.

My Venom 12 ft\lbs model is really accurate and a pleasure to shoot.
