    Default Youth Olympic Games

    Note worthy:
South African Air rifle shooter, 17 year old Sybrand Laurens from SAARA, participated at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games, Nanjing, China.
He started shooting in 2007 in the sporter class, moved up to Precision class in 2011 and was awarded his Junior Protea Colours in December 2013 to participate at the 2014 African Shooting Championship. After winning the Youth Qualifier Match in Egypt in February at the ASC, securing the quota place for South Africa, he left for Nanjing on 12 August as member of Team South Africa. On Wednesday he participated in the AR60 event and finished 16th with a score of 602.6. Yesterday he competed in the mixed teams Super Cup with team mate Ivana Babic from Croatia. They reached the quarter finals but were eliminated this morning. Brilliant performance by a South African junior. Well done.

Sybrand with Code Manager, Pepe Morton.

Thank you so much for posting the achievements of Sybrand and also some pathway which should be inspiring for other committed air rifle shooters starting out.
It is quiet difficult for outsiders to always get a correct picture.
Please continue the good work and post on our/and yours too forum regularly, not only good for the sport but in line with the modern trend in reporting.

Mike it's difficult to get exposure for the sport, seeing its not "spectator friendly". Also shooters leave the sport after school as funding an expensive sport while studying or working forces many shooters to hang up their rifles, so to speak. International participation at this level becomes evermore expensive due to the VERY poor exchange rate. We, both SAARA and SANSSU needs to start develop the next generation of juniors (U/13 and U/14) for the next YOG in 2018. Its a long road to reach this kind of excellence.

The Senior Protea team just boarded their flight to Spain to compete at the 51st World Cup in Granada. 3 Men and 3 Women make up the team with ages ranging from 15 to 20. Sybrand Laurens is also a member of the team. The rest of the teammembers are Horatio Delport, Charlto Vorster, Burnedine Erasmus, Tanya Snyders and Reinette Laurens. Team management are Marelize Snyders and Jaco Vorster. Good luck to our athletes. This will be the biggest competition any of them have yet to attend. Let's hope for lots of 10.9s
