    Default Barrel rust...

    Hi all.

I found a small patch of rust on my S 400's barrel. I clean the rifle regularly and cover the metal parts with a thin layer of oil. I have not got a gun safe so I store the rifle in a rifle bag in my closet. Now after +- 3 weeks of not handling the rifle (new baby arrived) I found the rust. :rude:

    1) What is the proper storadge of a air rifle?
    2) Would those silica sachets found in shoe boxes etc. work to curb rust?

I live on the west rand so I cant imagine humidity being a prob.

    Brian,
you have to store the condor in vaseline to prevent rust, it's due to the fact that they use such low quality metal and don't do proper deep blueing on the metal parts ....
(I see that you don't say the same about the EV2)

    Oh Guido .....

See the way your mind works Neil. The EV2 has square corners, maybe thats why it doesnt go brown

since i now live in durbs, home of guppies (note not sharks) and rust..........i've played around with various products.

Flitz rifle wax.......it polishes & protects (printed on bottle) up to 6 months in fresh water and 3 months in salt water. what's nice about the wax is that it does not rub off.

    B/C sheath anti-rust wipe

silicone gun/reel cloth (not to get it on moving parts)

i suppose all the above works..........but imho, not better than regular wipes of gun oil/brunox...etc

JCG - you should allow your rifle some air. Any moisture within the gun bag will accelerate the oxidising. Either pack the bag full of silica crystal packets or find another place to store it(?). Trouble is though, eventually those packets will absorb all they can and you'll have to air them out aswell.
Had any luck getting the rust off the barell yet?

Never store your rifle in a gunbag, Ilearned this the expencive way. Left my old 303 in a gunbag after a hunting trip (It was cleaned and oiled on the last night). after 5 weeks it was rusted so badly I had to have it reblued.

Yes, I got the rust of but now I am worried that it will keep on re-appearing on the same spot. When you catch the rust early enough is the damadge still permanent?
