Default Law relating to airgun ownership

As a recent arrival on the airgunning scene in SA I'm somewhat unclear about the law relating to airgun ownership in this country. As I understand it, I could own any air rifle in .177 (4.5mm) calibre, with no restrictions placed on power or energy in terms of joules or foot pounds measured at the muzzle. As I understand it a firearms licence or permit is required for any air rifle of .22 (5.5mm) calibre and above. But what about air rifles in .20 (5.0mm) calibre? Is a permit required, or not required? I would welcome comments/answers re the above from those in the know. Lastly, is there any restriction placed on buying a sound moderator for use on an air rifle?

Note: While there is no power limit on .177 and .20air rifles, if you want to take part in air rifle shooting clubs there are power limits to the different disciplines (like SANSU/10M, FT, HFT, Bench).

ps: Be wary of falling for cheap "1000fps" spring airguns...they seldom are, consistent accuracy is a problem and they're scope killers. Power is useless without accuracy.

hi Mick, great that you are getting into the sport of shooting. Which side of the world (CT) are you from? If I may, would be great if you could join us at our AAC club shoot at Wetton / Hillstar range in plantation road this Saturday. Good way to be exposed to the sport, meet the guys, check out various rifles and just have a good time. Sighting in starts at 9am
