After about 9 hours now of work i have got the stock to this level, the reason i have not tackled the front section yet as the flat surfaces allow me to hold it in the vice while shaping. Tools used for most of this work have been an angle grinder with sanding disc and a rasp tool that fits in a drill along with some other shaped pieces of wood which i use with sandpaper.

I keep asking myself why the hell i tackled a Thumbhole stock to start with as it is a real bastard to shape with all those compound curves....
Please bear in mind that this is still very rough and a lot of tweaking will be done.

I have now put in about 12 hours on the butt but have not put up anymore pictures because i am basically tweaking what you have seen already so the changes are not drastic enough at this time.
A question to those who have made or refurbished laminated stocks..... what is the best finishing coating material .... 2k clear paint .... oil base like Truoil or Danish oil or something else?

    Hi Mark

If you want bling bling 2k clear
If you want a wax "dof" finish Woodoc 10
If you want a real dull finish oil it.

I prefer 2k clear, like that Teoben stock, really brings out the effect of the laminate.

    Cheers my

Here are a couple of pictures of the butt section as it is now. I am basically happy now with the butt shape and thickness as well as the thumb hole area so have moved on to the pistol grip.
The two pictures attached show the still rough sanded butt section and the start of my work on the grip.

Did not get a lot done this weekend but at least I have the butt end roughly way I want it. So next step I will start to shape the front end.

OK Henko at Piet Prop did the inletting on the machine and Piet cut the basic shape for me, once I had drawn it out for him, on the bandsaw because he is unreal on that machine. The rest of the work has been done by me at home in my workshop.

Nicely done, the "flap-disc" on the grinder is a winner!!
It's the only time you can use a grinder whilst doing woodwork
