Something to note is I was forced to go and get my own importers code last year after ordering noise cancelling headphones on Amazon.
I suddenly got a message from the DHL customs clearance agents and they said that the new rules were that imports are checked against your ID number and if you import any item over R5000, or if you bring in more than three orders over a year, you now have register.
Worst thing is if this happens there are only a few places you can register, and the process is a bit of bureaucratic ball-ache. There is also a set time limit to register before they will destroy (probably steal, lol) your stuff.
Now that was actually the third item I'd imported for the year AND worth more than 5k, so I'm not entirely sure if I was flagged purely on a numbers basis and if the import value I was given was correct. Considering the person who phoned me was from a private courier company, if the generic importer code was an option, I'm surprised they didn't mention it.
Anyways, something to be sure of before committing!
