Default DIY Biathlon style cocking aid

I came across pictures of Biathlon style cocking aids on the Interweb. I decided to kill some time by giving it a go on a drill press.

    Does it work? Yes.
Does it work better than the original side lever concept? Dunnow.
Does it look different? Most definitely.

What is the actual purpose of this contraption?
Can they be bought in SA?

Biathletes wear skiing gloves (obviously) which hinders convential cocking of a rifle. These cocking levers, usually connected to straight pullback actuons, enable them to easily and quickly cock their rifles without the need to remove their gloves.
