Default Traveling on airlines with air rifle

I am planning to fly from UK to SA with a FAC Air Rifle.

Virgin and SAA will carry firearms with no issues.

Both require an import permit for a firearm but an air rifle is not classified as a firearm.

Anyone travelled before and know what procedures to follow?

I have seen in other posts that I will require the ITAC permit in advance.

Will the 0.22 version be a problem with SA Police at OR Tambo?

    .22 problem, 5.5 no problem.

    0.22 is 5.5mm

After some research into purchasing FAC rifles in the UK, its not worth the hassle as I will need to apply for a FAC license in advance. FAC costs 88-00 and I am unsure how long it takes.

I have a UK address and all the other requirements for the FAC but for someone just on holiday, it would be impossible to purchase a FAC Rifle.

I will look into how the law affects purchasing a used FAC rifle in the UK.

Airgun '0.22'/5.5mm is slightly smaller in caliber than actual firearm 0.22/5.6mm, so is not classified as a firearm in SA law.
So there should be no issue at the airport for a 0.22 airgun. Plenty are imported all the time by dealers and a few by individuals seemingly without issue, as long as the ITAC is in order. There is a recent post on this forum regarding bringing an airgun in.
Add that to the police's apparent cluelessness about airguns regardless of caliber and I'm sure you'll be just fine.

If the FAC version is too much hassle to purchase in the UK, how easy is it to convert a sub 12ft/Ib Air Rifle Purchased in the UK to FAC?

To avoid unnecessary confusion be sure to describe it as a 5.5 as per markings on the rifle and not .22 which might raise red flags and cause delays.

In terms of converting a sub 12fp rifle, it would depend on the model. Certain rifles are designed to be sub 12fp and no amount of tuning will increase power significantly ie. HW30 due to piston size, travel, transfer port size etc. Others are designed for higher power output and factory "detuned" to comply with legal limits.

Do some research on the rifle you have in mind....

An FAC would take at least 12 weeks from point of application.

Purchasing a used FAC air rifle is no different to buying one new, you would need an FAC with a relevant authorisation to purchase on it.

Another issue would be requiring a permit to permanently export an FAC rated air rifle.

There are no issues with taking a UK legal air rifle out of the country.

Mostly really easy, take it to a competent gunsmith like Kevin of airvolution and it can be done.
Otherwise import one of the Vortek kits.
