Default Sticky Rubber Coatings does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a range finder on which the soft rubber coatings have become messy and sticky making it impossible to use the instrument.

Does anyone know how to fix this , Talcum powder is not working , are there any other remedies ?.

Sorry if this question is in the wrong place or has been asked before.

    Thank you.

Hi Juniper. A tacky problem, I have a small Short Wave radio that had the same problem with its rubber coating, What you need is Dis-Chem 91 % rubbing alcohol and a large packet of cotton ear buds. Dip in the alcohol and work a small area at a time it will soften the sticky goo which you lift off with the ear buds. You will have to repeat a couple of times before you move to the next section. All the markings are still fine on my radio after this treatment. John

    Hello Mercury,
Thanks for the advice , I will try the Dischem alcohol method.
You have a nice little shortwave radio there , I have seen one , but do not own one , man those little radios are TINY , how does it perform ?.
I have an Icom R72 , but shortwave broadcasts have largely disappeared from the airwaves , so I seldom listen anymore.

    Cheers.

    Hi Juniper

Eton own Grundig so some are marked Grundig, they are very good performers
for their size (fits in your open hand). I also have a Yaesu FRG-7000 spends
most of its time on MW so your Icom R72 with an external speaker should be
good on MW (AM). Take your time with the alcohol cleaning, takes a few moments
after application for it to soften the rubber coating and then you can lift it off with the ear buds.

    Hi Juniper
Corn flour will sort out the range finder problem. A light dusting is all that is needed to restore it to the original texture. It seems to have a chemical interaction with what I suspect is silicone rather than rubber and works like magic.

Hello Sawbones and thanks for the alternative suggestion , it is good to know , I will try cornflower if the alcohol method does not work.

Mercury the picture of your radio has sparked my interest in radio listening again , time for long nights twiddling the dials , who knows what is lurking in the airwaves these days .
