    Default What stock oil?

Morning, I am in need of help please. A bit of a long-shot and a strange one at that.

    What Oil did I have??

A looong time ago a friend decanted some stock oil (from a tin) into a glass bottle for me. I have been using this since then and beautified many rifle stocks. Unfortunately, the oil has run out during the re-furb of FIL's 7x64.

I have no idea what oil it was unfortunately. (Friend passed away, so I cannot ask him what oil it was.)

I bought some Danish oil from Maple street timbers and it's not the oil I had.

    What I do remember:
It was a factory made oil - not home made.
Was in a tin. Rectangular shape.
Oil is see-through, not completely clear (brownish see-through).
Oil left a yellow wax like residue in the glass bottle.

    Any ideas please?

Appreciated. Will post a pic of the residue in the bottle when I get home. Maybe it will assist in ID.

    Alan...

I am certain you are looking at Danish oil.

Did it smell a bit like Jeyes fluid...pine-type smell?

As it dries, it leaves an amber-coloured resin behind. This you see building up on the inside of the bottle cap and around the top and threads of the bottle.

In the bottle, it's the same colour as Kilkenny. Go and buy a few and pour them into a glass. Check the colour, then drink them.

    You can thank me later.

    Hi Sean,

No idea of the smell, but the build-up around the inside and on the bottle cap and threads sounds spot on.

The Rustins Danish I bought is however much thinner than the original "mystery oil". Will it thicken in the tin over time?

Yes it will, because every time you open the container, esp. if it's a wide-mouthed one, the volatiles in the product evaporate. That's also why they say you should only apply it in very thin coats, so that the resins hve a chance to cure.

Almost like nail polish that gets thicker and less user-friendly over time...

    What about London oil?
Powerkeg used to sell it, is that the same kind of thing as tung oil?

There is a very distinct difference in smell between the remainder of oil in the bottle and the tin of Danish oil. Will have to visit Maple street and smell their products.
