The rifle is new +/- 500 shots in total before the test. I started with cold rifle and shot 3-4 pellets before putting it through the chrony. Then shot 1-2 pellets in between before changing and testing with another type of pellets.

Look at my first shots with PPP1! And the advertised ft/s on HW97K is 960 ft/s.

With the heavier TM1 the speed kept on increasing, while with the lighter PPP1 the speed kept on decreasing, like the rifle was trying to find it's optimum speed.

I'm also not sure if the ft/s is consistent enough for a good springer. May be someone else can comment.

Then I started shooting groupings and after another 50-60 shots with JSBs the rifle started dieseling (louder twang, a little bit of smoke and smell) and my groupings went completely off. The interesting thing is that the pellets were hitting the same vertical line but even at 25 yards the gaps opened to more than 5-6 cm. At 50 yards - again hitting the vertical line but with big gaps. I put it again on the crony and this time I got 1042 ft/s with JSB!

Should I get it stripped degreased and re-lubed by a gunsmith or should I just keep on cleaning the excess grease as soon as it start dieseling until it settles down?

This is what my 77 does with jsb's so pretty close to urs.

Thsi is what it does with AA''s

So ir econ your speed is par for the course. That consistancy sounds a bit dodge after u used the ligther pellets, but there might be an explenation

Give it a bit of time to settle and it should improve.

A good springer can give great shot to shot results.

Allan, should I strip it and re-lube it to sort out the dieseling or just keep on cleaning the excess grease?

If you have the skill to strip the HW you will only benifit from taking out excess grease.

Shoot at least 2000 pellets before you do any chrono tests !!

I would strip it! When I did mine I found copious amounts of grease in front of the piston seal, thats whats making you get 1042 ft/s with JSB's! You can order the correct greases yourself from Maccari. I don't think too many gunsmiths know how to tune airguns.

Would you guys not suggest him put a few thousand pellets through before doing the Macari- sitting with the same issue got the rifle settled in very accurate very consistant- with a brand new full power hornet kitt, piston seal and respective lubes lying there waiting to be put in. Dont want to fix it if it aint broke....

nope...do the Maccari as soon as you can...

get that excess lube out of your HW as soon as possible...they are overlubed at the factory and often diesel for a few thousand rounds before settling down...

I'll get the Macarri or V-mach kit but not right now. For now, I'm trying to interpret the results from a stock standard rifle and look into how I can improve it. Also it's interesting for me how different pellets compare on the chrony. That is why I was asking for ideas and suggestions from more experienced guys by posting my chrony results.

ok, then I would stay away from the Prometheus unless you want to damage the HW97 in the long run...pellet is too light and recoil will be harsher.

stick to pellets in the 7.8-8.4gr range...basically JSBs or ACCUPELS.

Your velocity results look fairly consistent [with some hot ones which indicated dieselling]...another reason to tune your rifle soonest, even if its just a relube...

the gamo pellets [forget about them and trash them..]

    Guido,

The prometheus weights are as following:

    PPP1 - 6.9 grains
    SN1 - 7.95 grains
    TM1 - 9.5 grains

SN1 is in the ideal weight for a springer. Why should I stay away from Prometheus in general?

Also, I never shot with PPP1 and TM1 with this rifle before. I just used them for the test and results, I think look very puzzling. I also have Accupels and every 4-5 shot, I get a flyer, so I can't use them unless I want to spend the time to sort them.
