why are the side wheel so big on the scopes
Cause it's easier to precisely do a slow turn/adjustment on a bigger wheel than a small knob.
Easier reach from bottom, better for fine tuning/precise range finding due to better leverage and you have more space to scribble and paste your ranges on.
Another reason is once you put it on, other newbies can start asking you the same question and you feel like an expert explaining them

It must be so big to stop the left-handed shots to load so that they can run out of time when shooting a competition.
Ha! Ha! said the Clown!!!
The longer ranges on the Parralax are very cose together, and a larger side wheel means that you can fit them in to the side wheel more comfortably, which will mean that your rangfinding will be more accurate.
