We are returning to SA in Sept and want to bring our air rifle from UK. Does anyone know what permits I need and where to get them from? Thanks... ?
From my own perspective I brought in neilg's Pro-Target in August 2004. The only hassle I had was getting the bloody thing onto the plane at Heathrow, being dragged halfway round the terminal to find a customs officer to confirm that it was actually an air rifle.
At Jo'burg, the rifle came off a separate conveyor belt than the rest of my luggage. When I went to pick it up the guy standing by the belt said I needed a security officer present to collect it. I pointed out that it was a .177 air rifle and as such not subject to licence (pulling out a copy of the FCA that I had printed out). I was told OK just take it.
I headed for the red channel at customs to declare it but was stopped before entering by a customs officer, who asked what I had. I replied a .177 air rifle - and was then told just go through green channel - not questioned further or inspected!!

When you travel just make sure you speak to your airline in advance about taking guns and see what their policy is. Most airlines seem OK with transporting guns on international flights, but from what I have heard internal flights in the UK mostly will not take guns.
BTW phoenix if you manage to get down to Cornwall at all give me a call and I can take you out shooting.
