Default AirForce Talon for Field Target?

I recently bought another talon, 2nd hand off the forum. Did quite a bit of work on spring designs, hammers and valve etc, (Cost of making 1 spring or 4 is the same) did the following mod’s from my spares bin:

    20” .20 barrel,
Stripped, cleaned and tuned the valve
stuck the old silencer on it.

    The prelim results are in
Velocity is 855 fps (22fpe) (managed to adjust the valve to get 868 fps). With a high flow valve this will increase to 1300fps.

Grouping was done at 26 metres. Not up to the Ft standard but not bad for a first attempt.
Scope used was an old 3-9 x 35.

I am now wondering if I put a 16” .177 on it I should be able to reduce the velocity to 750 - 800 fps (which may give me 12fpe) and then I can join the FT guys and see what the fuss is about.

Or Alternatively I put in my spare “strong spring” and hi flow valve and sell it (as I already have a 50fpe rifle) so that I can buy an entry level FT rifle. Me thinks I will try the .177 route first, if the ft bug bites then we will see. The grouping has to improve though otherwise I am on a hiding to nothing.

dave. with that scope that grouping is not too bad... Yo would however need to mod the stock a bit to give you depth when taking sitting shots.

    Hey Boet.
It's a crime to down tune a Talon to sub 12 foot pound!!!
It's like having a Farrari and your only aloud to use it to practice your paralel parking.
It is not what the Talon was designed for ...

I know, its like plowing with a rolls royce. But I have a arse kicking 50fpe talon already and it appears to be the cheapest way to try FT. Also curious as to the bottom limit on this gun

A friend of mine had a Talon (The one that made one hole groupings at 100m) that he shot at 27 foot pound. For that rifle it was the perfect ballance between accuracy and power and shot count.

He once tried it to down tune it. It shot very inconsistant over the chrony at low speeds ... BUT THEN every rifle differs.

Yip. All the shots touched to make one hole. Farmer placed a post with pics a while ago. And that was not even from a deadrest, but from the field target position. He did that a few saturdays in a row, so it was not just luck ...

    How big was the hole...10...15...20cm?

Dave, you don't really need under 12fpe rifle to try FT. You can go to an FT shoot with any rifle, just if it's over 12fpe, you don't get official scorring.
